New Mick Hargreaves Music Video coming early 2018

We are looking at a new music video from Mick Hargreaves for this song, "Crystal Ball", a co-write with Joe Delia, shot and edited by JTiL, in the early part of 2018.

Photo of the Day - 1966 Ampeg Gemini II Guitar Amp

The recent arrival and rehab of a 1966 Ampeg Gemini II all-tube guitar amplifier (right) spices up the comfy front parlour guitar amplifier corner here at the recording studio, ready to go as of this week on the first floor. There's already smaller Vox ACTV4 and Sears Silvertone amps in isolation booths next to the control room, and giant guitar rigs can be isolated in the basement.

Micing The Baby Grand Piano

Artist Anthony Maragni comes in today for tracking with pianist/producer Mark Mancini, who will play the 1929 Hazelton Brothers (NYC) piano. Small & large diaphragm condenser pairs, a pair of PZM's under the lid, and a 57 "in the hole".  They won't all wind up in the mix, but I like the coverage for different flavors that each song may want.

New Buddy Woodward offering "Little Blue Sky" Mixed at LSRR

"Little Blue Sky" by Buddy Woodward (Nashville TN) was mixed by Mick Hargreaves at the Lantern Sound Recording Rig. Buddy co-wrote this one with Tim Stafford (of the powerhouse bluegrass outfit Blue Highway).

Colin The Intern Records the 1966 Fender Precision Bass

It was Colin The Intern's first day today at the Lantern Sound Recording Rig today. One of the things we ran through was recording the electric bass, using a mic'd amplifier and a DI channel simultaneously. Colin played the bass, too. This is a snippet of his performance of "Suffer" by the Smashing Pumpkins.

1966 Fender P-Bass (flatwound strings)
Ampeg 1964 B-15N Portaflex bass amplifier
Heavy-gauge plectrum

Left channel - passive Radial JDI
Right channel - Shure SM7B microphone on Ampeg amp.
Preamp - ART MPA Gold, dual channel, Tung-Sol 12AX7 tubes.
I/O - Echo Audiofire12 Interface
DAW - Logic / Mac OS

We'd rarely mix bass with the DI panned to one side, and the mic channel panned to the other. It's usually a blend of both up the middle. But by panning these two tracks hard left and right, it's easy to hear the difference between the DI and the microphone. Stay tuned for more from Colin the Intern!

5PM - MARK MANCINI: On faculty at The East End Arts, Keyboardist Mark Mancini is a natural, having been a part of the Tri-State Blues scene since the early 70's. Influences are mind-boggling: Otis Spann, Roosevelt Sykes, Pinetop Perkins, Detroit Junior, Johnnie Johnson, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Big Bill Broonzy, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Professor Longhair, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Jon Cleary. R'n'B groups such as The Shirelles, The Marvellettes, the Coasters, the Platters, the Drifters, and Ronnie Spector have relied on his blues feel for authenticity in the R&B shows. 7PM - ROBERT BRUEY grew up in rural New England and lives on Long Island’s North Fork. His roots and how they have helped to shape him are reflected in the original music on his recently released CD, 'Carousel', and are even more evident during a live performance. Robert Bruey’s music is honest and real, raw and meaningful, gritty and naturalistic. His deft, spare and unique finger-picking style -- with notes carefully left alone to be heard in the moment -- provides a perfect complement for his earthy and soulful voice and the meaningful, introspective lyrics of his songs. As a musical artist, he paints with words -- imbuing his songs with imagery that enables listeners to visualize his stories as he sings them.Although he cites such diverse artists as Dave Matthews, Van Morrison, Waylon Jennings, Jackson Browne and Damien Rice as influences, Robert Bruey is his own muse blazing his own musical path – one that should lead him into listening rooms and living rooms far and wide.

About the Performers on the @AliveAfterFive_ Arts Stage: THUR JULY 6 2017 #AA5Patch

We kick of the Arts Stage Summer Season in Patchogue tonight for the first of four ALIVE AFTER FIVE editions. We will be located at 150 W Main St, Patchogue, NY 11772, in front of the Sixth District Court Building, between the Tap Room and The Blue Point Brewery Stage.

Riverhead, we will see you THU JUL 13 at Alive on 25!
Director: Dorene Rose
Host: Mick Hargreaves
Sound: Lantern Sound Recording Rig

Here are our music and spoken word peformers tonight.

5PM - Mark Lawlor: Mark doesn’t consider himself a “musician” but more so, a songwriter! His roots were grounded in traditional Irish ballads, but his guitar-dominated songs and intricate lyrics have metamorphosed into a style somewhere between quality pop to a sort of grunge folk, or “acid folk” as he likes to call it! He worked in the past with UK producer Jez Coad on his debut album 16b Fade Street. Resident in Ireland he commutes to the US regularly and gigs with local Long Island musicians Anthony Liberatore, Jeff Marshall and Alex Sarkis under band name The Undecided.
https://www.facebook.com/MarkLawlorAndTheUndecided/

5:45 PM - Nathaniel Watts:  Spoken word performer. vintage vinyl dealer and author of Everyday Writing:A Deconstruction of the Human Hive, Nathaniel Watts has been a mainstay on the Metro Area performance circuit since his Everyday Writing project began back in March of 2011. Whether it's him performing with his band iAmnot or one of his dynamic solo sets that earned him celebrity status at Manhattan's Bowery Poetry Club, Watts takes a stage armed and ready to unlaod his daily observations of modern society. He releases them in a powerful empathetic way that's become dubbed as high Wattage. Everyday Writing: A Deconstruction of the Human Hive is Watts' first book and has spread globally. Readers have called it everything from cryptic gibberish to a deep and real wake up call.

6 PM - Bryan Gallo: Bryan's highly anticipated debut album, The Party Guest, was released on October 23rd, 2014.  Pete Mancini of the Bellerose, NY based Alt-Country band Butchers Blind served as producer for the album with the entirety of Butchers Blind serving as the backing band.  The album was recorded and mixed in a remote East Hampton cottage by Mick Hargreaves via his Lantern Sound Recording Rig, and doesn't stray from Bryan's singer/songwriter sensibilities all while stacking on some true Rock and Roll.  The Party Guest is a defining statement that encompasses several genres and shows promise for this up and coming Singer/Songwriter.  https://www.bryangallo.com/

6:45 PM - Pete MC2: Pete Mc2 is the current torch bearer for the muse exchange a collective of visual, musical and spoken word artists who specialize in pushing the limits of creative output. His first book " the edge of and observable universe" is due out any minute now.

7 PM - Free Grass Union: You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. - Oh, The Places You Will Go! (Dr.Suess) http://www.freegrassunion.com/

7:45 - Steven T. Licardi is the author of "Death By Active Movement" (Local Gems Press, 2013), is an actor, spoken word poet, motivational speaker, activist, and therapist from Long Island. Steven uses performance to engage in political discourse in order to positively impact communities and to bring about social change. He believes in the power of the arts to teach empathy, love, altruism, and compassion. www.TheSvenBo.com

8PM - Rob Europe is a blues guitarist mesmerizing audiences wherever he appears.Long Island's 2014 International Blues Challenge representative plays with an expertly executed Piedmont style upstaged only by a voice so soaked in soul it comes as no surprise that musical mastery runs in the young bluesician's family. Europe is the great-grandson of Jazz Hall-of-Famer James Reese Europe of the Harlem Rattlers; ragtime music and the Clef Club Orchestra. An ancestral connection gives context to how deeply this rising young musician – whose unique, gravel-laden vocals jibe perfectly with fingers that pluck notes as powerfully as they wield a slide – bleeds the blues, particulary the pre-war country variety.

Snakes On a Floor

So. This is a seemingly boring image of "Snakes On A Floor"...

...but it's so much more than that. As you can see from the snake on the top, The Lantern Sound Recording Rig, which takes up nearly the entire first floor, has twelve inputs (through a variety of mic pre's into Logic), with two headphone mixes sent back to the floor.

The sixteen channel snake on the bottom is the new thing in this old three-story farmhouse. Those inputs run all the way up to the finished third floor loft, where George Howard (Sound of Music Studios, Richmond VA [where David Lowery/Cracker were mustering out of], Bay Burger's weekly "Jazz Jam" series, rebroadcast on 88.3 WPPB - FM 88.3FM) and his "Retro Sound" analog mixing room are now ensconced. That boasts a 24x8x2 Soundcraft mixing console (the one Beck used for "Odelay"), a Protools DAW, and a bunch of outboard hardware processing, EQ, and effects units that we want you shake a stick at! When we lay in an additional 8-channel snake, 24 inputs can go all the way upstairs from the first floor. (Pinch me).

Earlier this week, George did a drum tracking session on the first floor, recorded into ProTools on the third floor, right through the console. This maiden voyage of the studio link-up went swimmingly. We're pumped.

In a matter of days, I will be adding a Logic DAW deal up there, so analog mixes can be digitally sourced that way as well. Stereo mixes from either studio can be routed to any and all digital destinations, or to the Ampex 440 1/4" reel-to-reel that's located between the two rooms in the spacious stairwell.

We're ALL about the analog front end. It's critical, in our estimation. Then there's the incredible comfort that sets us apart. We're the closest thing around here to Big Pink, but with better gear. That said, we've even got the Big Pink "Basement Tapes" mic preamps that were used on every darn thing that made it to tape when Bob Dylan and the Band were hanging out doing their thing.
Read that paragraph again. We're the only ones around here fitting that description. More fun details on that soon. There's a lot of history to research there, and I want to get it right.

Why haven't you cut your basic tracks here yet, and then taken the sessions home to do overdubs? Why haven't you taken what you've already recorded to mix here? Well, you didn't know yet - but now you know.

We have tons of ways to save your budget bottom line. The workflow must necessarily evolve to let the artist accomplish things without breaking the bank, or breaking up the band. Let's talk.

Thanks, everyone. Let's make things, and most importantly, let's make a difference in your art.

Confidence Men release new song "Trumpy The Con Man" on #Bandcamp FRI FEB 03 to benefit #ACLU

They came, they recorded a song, they left: THE CONFIDENCE MEN have just dropped a new song called "TRUMPY THE CON MAN" on Bandcamp tonight. The band got SUPER lucky on the timing of this release, as it coincides with Bandcamp's announced donation to the American Civil Liberties Union of one full day's worth of their revenues on Friday Feb 3 2016. Here is an official statement from the band:

"We got this together as a spur of the moment thing. It was fun, but most importantly, The Confidence Men are forwarding revenues from the sales of this performance to the ACLU. It's a "Pay What You Want" download at Bandcamp (including FREE - just enter "0" when prompted), but try to be generous. The ACLU is a great cause and we need them now more than ever. Thanks, everyone."

THE CONFIDENCE MEN

Mark Mancini, Anthony Maragni, Don Bracken @ LSRR

Busy here yesterday. Co-producer Mark Mancini (L) spent the afternoon getting the Anthony Maragni (C) recordings into mix mode with us, then Mark tracked evening piano parts on the  Hazelton Brothers baby grand for a Don (R) and Rachel Bracken song.
